Can AI Design My Wedding Dress?

It’s a question I never imagined I would be asked when I started in bridal all those years ago, but lately, I’m hearing it more and more:

CAN AI DESIGN MY WEDDING DRESS?

And my answer might surprise you.

I THINK AI CAN BE A WONDERFUL PLACE TO START.

Brides are coming into Formally Yours with AI-generated images of wedding dresses they’ve created simply by describing what they think they want. And honestly? I love it. It gives us a starting point. It takes all those ideas floating around in a bride’s head and turns them into something we can actually look at together.

I THINK AI SHOULD BE THE STARTING POINT, NOT THE END POINT.

Let me tell you about two brides who used AI in two very different ways.

BRIDE #1: WHAT WOULD YOU CHANGE

I recently had a bride come into Formally Yours who found a dress she absolutely loved. She wasn’t quite ready to say yes because she was still shopping, so she left to think about it.

Before coming back, she took a picture of herself in the dress, uploaded it to AI, and asked, WHAT CHANGES WOULD YOU MAKE TO THIS DRESS?

Well, AI made changes.

It changed the neckline to a style that was popular a couple of years ago but isn’t particularly current now. Then it changed the waistline to a basque waist that wasn’t actually possible to create on that particular gown because of the fabric and beadwork.

She came back for another appointment, showed me the new AI image, and asked if I had anything like it.

I did not.

So instead, we put her original favorite dress back on.

And guess what?

SHE LOVED IT EXACTLY THE WAY IT WAS.

She said yes to the original dress, the one she had fallen in love with before she asked AI what it would change.

And that experience made me realize something else about AI: WHEN YOU ASK IT TO MAKE CHANGES, IT IS GOING TO MAKE CHANGES, BECAUSE THAT IS WHAT YOU ASKED IT TO DO.

But that doesn’t necessarily mean the dress needed changing in the first place.

She had already put this dress on her own body. She had seen how it fit, felt the fabric, moved in it, and most importantly, she absolutely LOVED HERSELF IN IT. AI didn’t know any of those things. It simply looked at an image and responded to the question she asked.

So maybe the question isn’t, “What would you change about this dress?”

It’s Do I Love the Way I FEEL IN THIS DRESS?

Because if you love the feeling, WHY MESS WITH PERFECTION?

BRIDE #2: THIS IS WHAT I’M IMAGINING

Another bride came in and showed me an image of the dress she wanted. At first, I didn’t even realize it was AI- generated. She had described her ideas to AI and used the image it created to show me what she had in mind.

I happened to have a gown in the store that looked remarkably similar.

I saved it for her while we tried a couple of other dresses first. Then I put her in the gown that most closely resembled her AI image.

She ABSOLUTELY LOVED IT

“This is exactly what I put into AI. This is exactly what I wanted”

And she said yes to the dress.

To me, that is a great way to use AI.

LET AI HELP YOU DREAM

Using AI before you shop really isn’t that different from bringing inspiration pictures from Pinterest or Instagram. You’re showing your stylist what is speaking to you.

Maybe you don’t know the words Mikado, crepe, basque waist, or cathedral train yet. You just know what you like when you see it.

AI can help you get those ideas out of your head and into an image.

Then bring that image to us.

Because that’s where the next part begins.

A picture can’t tell you how Mikado feels compared with satin, or how chiffon moves compared with crepe. It can’t let you touch the lace or see the beadwork sparkle in person. It can’t tell you whether the structure of a gown will give you the support you want.

And it definitely can’t show you exactly how that dress is going to look and FEEL ON YOUR BODY.

That’s where trying on real wedding dresses-and working with an experienced bridal stylist-becomes so important.

Sometimes we may have something almost identical.

Sometimes we’ll put that idea on your body and discover that another silhouette, fabric, or detail makes you

And that is the FUN of it.

I think AI can absolutely help you IMAGINE your wedding dress.
